I think all of us have had recipes in the past that we have lost or misplaced and would love to find again. And some of the restaurants and places that have closed years ago still tempt us with memories of foods that we enjoyed way back then and haven't had since.
I was born and reared in Jackson, Mississippi and remember quite a few childhood treats in or around Jackson that I would love to taste again. For instance, does anyone remember the Pig Stands? There was one on West Capitol Street near the Jackson Zoo. They had the best apple pie I have ever tasted. The crust was a little salty. Does anyone have their recipe? They also served hot dogs, split and grilled and served on a hamburger bun with dill relish that were delicious.
The Circle N Cafe in Ackerman, Mississippi made a Choctaw burger to die for. Every time my parents and I would ride up the Natchez Trace, we would stop at the Circle N Cafe. The Choctaw burger, as well as I can remember, was more like meat loaf on a hamburger bun. I would just love to have that recipe.
The cream horns and brownies and homemade twisted sesame rolls at the old Primos Restaurants that used to be scattered around Jackson. The new Primos on Lakeland is owned by a relative of the original Primos family and they don't make cream horns or rolls like that. They serve brownies, but as good as they are, they aren't as good as the original Primos.
My home economics teacher gave us a recipe for something she called Kentucky Pie. It contained sugar, egg yolks, cinnamon, cloves, buttermilk I think and a little vinegar. It was topped with meringue and was simply delicious. The filling was cooked on top of the stove and then poured into a pre-baked pie shell. I have searched the internet and all the Kentucky pie recipes they have are for the Kentucky Derby pie, which is not what I am looking for. The vinegar pies and buttermilk pies they have are poured into an uncooked pie shell and baked. I would love to have my Kentucky pie recipe again.
We were on the coast a few years ago at a professional legal association dinner at a lawyer's house and his 4 cooks put on quite a spread. They had the best green bean bundles my husband and I have ever tasted. My husband asked them for the recipe and they refused to part with it. Do any of you have a good green bean bundle recipe? Seems like theirs may have had some brown sugar involved in it somewhere.
If y'all have been looking for a recipe for something and can't find it, please let me know. I have a lot of recipes and after getting 6 children grown, have managed to cook a few meals in my life. Turkey and dressing is simple for me.
